Why this Blog?

I hope that this blog will become a place to look after my writing ideas and that, over time, I can use it to archive all my favourite creative sites on the web. Maybe others will enjoy it too.

Internally Observing

This was an experiment in writing without the usual recourses to visual effects or using language that I deemed too 'telling'. It was an attempt to relay only an experience, but my wont is always to write in third person so... huh. That said, the plan was to use as few pronounsd as possible - it's surprisingly hard to avoid them! Well, anyway, it's some words. See what you make of them!

I'm not going to offer the usual analysis, not because I don't think it interesting, but because I appear to be posting daily and I suspect too much of that is off-putting! Also, this was experimental and designed purely to keep me writing so I'm not as interested. That said, I am posting it here in case anyone reads any of these posts (I can't believe that, after eight years since officially abandoning this place, anyone actually checks here at all!) and is interested.

We shall see. Maybe if I update enough I shall get visitors to the garden again, and wouldn't that be nice?

It's Psychological

Back in the saddle again, and not even side-saddle, but a new edit of those first paragraphs of the nano attempt from last year. I'm hoping this will help me get started again. There aren't many huge changes but I hope it's easier to read, has less run on sentences and fewer repeated words.

Analysis is intriguing and is from 750words.com as ever.

Rating: PG-13 (swearing, sexual content[?] and violence[?])

Feeling mostly Affectionate[?], and concerned mostly about Home - intriguing.

Mindset: Extrovert - Negative - Certain - Feeling

Secrets that men keep

Tonight I fill in a section. I realised today that Moon Dancer doesn't eat or drink on his quest for about four days. Okay, that's fine, I guess, but there's no way he can't drink in that time. He'd be mad with thirst, something I haven't even mentioned. Okay, the lack of hunger is fine, I guess, but the lack of thirst? Unforgivable!

So, tonight I thought to simply edit that section a little and then move onto new stuff. Instead we have an additional discussion in which I learned more about how males operate in this society I am creating. Also, a little about how the sexes are viewed by men, I hope that came out right. Anyway, another conversation that I hope retains enough of the poetry of previous entries to stand with them.

Analysis from 750words.com as always:

Rating: PG (sexual content) - not sure where that is. I guess one of them is naked?

Feeling mostly self expressive and concerned mostly with religion

Mindset: Introvert - Positive - Uncertain - Thinking (very male?)

Time: the Future; Primary Sense: Sight (damn); Us and Them: You

Murderer

"So why did you contact me?"

"You were on the run, seemed everyone is looking for you."

"Why should I trust you?"

"Oh, you shouldn't.  That would be as bad as me trusting you.  I mean, I can say that I'm not going to call the police or anything but you have absolutely no reason to believe me when I do.  I guess all you have is faith."

"You one of those religious nuts?  I saw plenty of those in prison."

"I believe in God."

"I could kill you now, and no one would ever find the body."

"I know.  You absolutely could.  I wouldn't expect God to pop down and stop you either, if that's what you'd be trying to disprove."

"So what's to stop me?"

"Nothing, and that's what makes this so delicious.  I can add another inducement: I have food, shelter and a safe place.  But I've ditched my phone.  You're right: no one knows that I'm here or that I contacted you or that you are here.  Of course, you could choose to disbelieve everything that I've just said."

"I'm not innocent, I killed them.  All of them."

"I know.  Who said I thought you didn't?"

"So why help me?"

"I haven't helped you yet.  But, in answer to your question, why not?  Do you need the help?  Do you want me to help?  Should I offer some assistance?  Does it matter who you are?"

Random Ideas

One idea that constantly occurs to me, after I've got past the world building of most of my novel plans and the like, is the idea of having a main character who is not the character through which we view the story.  I don't just mean by having the story in third person omniscient either, I mean by having the standard third person view but multiple POV characters who all interact with the character about whom the story and plot is.

Put another way, it would be like reading Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books but from the points of view of Harris, Harper, Wellington etc rather than centring on Sharpe himself.  So you'd have the story of Sharpe's Rifles told by various members of his regiment, with Sharpe appearing at various points, then a gap until he appears to rescue Harper and the rest from the ambush and so on and so forth.  It would be very difficult to write but it would be really interesting.  Mainly to see if I could actually create that many realistic characters who would be 'real' enough to follow.  Each one would have their vignette and, slowly, it would become apparent that the plot was following someone else, someone who featured in all of the other stories.

I'd have to actually write it, though, and the lack of posting here would seem to suggest that this would be difficult.  However, the point of this blog is to spur my typing and I seem to get a groove on every year.  When it happens this year I just have a place to put it all.

Mission Statement

When I get this place up and running I suspect that I'll make this a page rather than the first post, but I'm conscious of the need to post something here so that I actually remember to post here with creative projects.

This is designed as a blog for me writing stuff.  An author's blog if you will where, instead of confessionals about my life and stuff, I blog about ideas and half-formed things.  There will likely be everything from half-baked plots and synopses through to scenes and conversations that serve as fragments of some larger pieces.  I hope to post a few short stories, too, the kind that are too short to ever really be published but may well provide somebody, somewhere, with a few minutes of interest.

It is designed to be public and open, so if there is strong language it will be plot related and I'll signpost it as such.  I may tackle more adult-y themes but not in a 'adult = porn' way - I mean my writings are designed for, well, me, and so probably not always appropriate for young'uns without some adulty guidance along the way.

Who knows, I may even garner a readership that will comment on what I write - even they just say whether or not they like it.  Anyway, that'll do for now.
